day 1. “patch play”

do you have a favorite piece of woven clothing that needs mending? or perhaps something that’s a bit too well-worn to trust being seen out and about in? fret not! using a basic running stitch and cotton floss, we will learn how to patch and repair our garments. not only will we preserve them, but create a visible journal so that our stitches becoming memories of our daily lives. tears and imperfections will soon become not problems to be fixed, but opportunities to highlight and tell a personal story.

- a basic knowledge of needle and thread is suggested.

- please note do bring a favorite piece of clothing in need of repair, or that you may want to embellish. all other materials will be provided.

day 2. “hand stitched indigo moon keepsake drawstring extravaganza!”

drawing on the techniques learned on day 1, we will slow stitch on a rectangular panel to create a small lined drawstring bag, perfect for carrying around your favorite stitching supplies, a sketchbook or journal. we will also explore ways to add pattern or figurative elements, continuing our story~telling through the act of hand stitching.

- all materials, including naturally hand dyed cotton and linen patches will be supplied.

- be sure to look for an email closer to the event from Karen asking if you would prefer a natural or indigo kit to create your bag from.

for the last 25 years, Karen Stevens has been a freelance CAD software designer and teacher, training textile and fashion designers to create knits, prints and woven designs for the garment industry. these days you are more likely to find her in her creatively cluttered studio than on her computer, adding one more vintage patch to a favorite pair of jeans or double gauze shirt.

her love of visible mending, natural fibers, hand dyed fabrics and slow stitching has recently turned into a small side business, creating one of a kind stitched curiosities for her friends and etsy shop. Karen lives in rural Northwest CT with her family, menagerie of pets wearing party hats, and an indigo dipped laundry line.
